Belgium’s foreign minister says his country will join the UK, France, Canada and Australia in recognising Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly next week.
Maxime Prevot says “firm sanctions” will be imposed on Israel, including a ban on imports from illegal settlements.
But he said this will only be formalised once Hamas releases all of the captives and no longer governs Gaza.
The Belgian Foreign Minister told Al Jazeera why this was the right time to act.
