Famine fears grow in Gaza as Save the Children warns of irreversible child harm

Ahmad AlHendawi, Regional Director for MENA and Eastern Europe at Save the Children International, warned in an Al Jazeera interview that Gaza faces catastrophic famine conditions, with 88 children already dead from starvation and 70,000 under-fives acutely malnourished.
He described an “apocalyptic reality” where children fear both bombs and being buried alive, stressing that four months of systemic deprivation have caused irreversible harm. While recovery requires 600+ aid trucks daily, Israel’s restrictions prevent delivery, with 1,000 Palestinians killed while queueing for food.
The blockade represents a political crisis that requires an immediate ceasefire and proper humanitarian access, as mandated by international law.
Established aid mechanisms developed over 160 years are being violated, as starvation becomes weaponised.
Without urgent action, child deaths will escalate dramatically, with the situation already surpassing famine thresholds.
Gaza’s children face irreversible physical and psychological damage from prolonged malnutrition and trauma.
