France hands over its last military base in Chad, ending decades of defence cooperation

France has officially handed over its last military base in Chad, ending decades of defence cooperation between the two nations. This move follows similar withdrawals from Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, reducing France’s military footprint in the Sahel. Chad had remained a key strategic ally for France, but the transition signals a broader shift in regional security dynamics. The handover ceremony took place in the capital, Ndjamena, amid growing calls for African nations to assert greater military independence.

Al Jazeera’s Ahmed Idris reports from Ndjamena.
