The ceasefire between Hamas and Israel is in “serious jeopardy” as the Israeli far-right government feels emboldened by Trump’s plan to forcibly displace Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, says HA Hellyer, senior fellow at the Royal United Services Institute.
“At present, the Israeli government has not shown a tremendous amount of commitment to this outline in the first place,” Hellyer told Al Jazeera, noting how Netanyahu instructed his cabinet to refer to the ceasefire as an “outline” rather than an agreement.
“And then you have in the background Donald Trump’s administration talking about clearing out Gaza – [creating] a ‘Riviera on the Mediterranean‘. All of that strengthens the Israeli far right and those who want Netanyahu to just go back to war,” Hellyer said.
Regarding reports that the Egyptian president won’t meet Trump at the White House should the agenda include the US president’s plan to uproot Palestinians from Gaza, Hellyer said el-Sisi will likely end up travelling to Washington but with a plan endorsed by other Arab states to oppose the displacement of Palestinians.
Hellyer said the threat of a potential cut to US aid for Egypt, the second largest recipient in the region after Israel, would not likely force el-Sisi to accept Palestinians settling in the country.
“When you look at Egypt’s overall GDP, we’re talking a tiny amount, and it’s certainly an amount that could be offset by support from the Gulf. So I don’t think the aid is going to be remotely sufficient to get Egypt to say, ‘We’re going to go for this Riviera plan,’” he added.
