Severe storms and powerful tornadoes have swept across the US Midwest, killing at least 21 people and causing widespread destruction. Kentucky authorities have declared a mass casualty event, while rescue teams continue to search for survivors in collapsed homes and buildings. Over 700,000 homes and businesses across more than a dozen states remain without power.
