A towering expanse of crimson thread, a brand new set up by Chiharu Shiota (beforehand) suspends 10,000 letters throughout the nave of Berlin’s König Galerie, a Brutalist-style house situated within the former St. Agnes church. The immersive development runs flooring to ceiling and is awash with notes from individuals all over the world who share their goals following a very devastating 12 months. Aptly named “I hope…,” the large-scale challenge hangs two wire boats that seem to drift upward at its middle, evoking journey into an unknown future.
For this collaborative set up, the Japanese artist, who’s lived in Berlin for the final 20 years, attracts on an identical piece from 2015 titled “The Key within the Hand.” That earlier work equally makes use of gathered objects and vibrant crimson thread, though it trapped 50,000 keys in an internet that swelled from a picket boat. On this iteration, nonetheless, Shiota lets the strands fall loosely and connects them to paper notes, leaving the person components open to motion and alter.
