Nanako Kume’s pendant lights would look completely at residence in an elementary classroom or artwork studio. The Tokyo-based designer is behind a playful assortment of fixtures that layers colored-pencil-style wooden shavings into whimsical lampshades.
To create the works, Kume developed a big sharpener operable with a hand-crank. A brief movie by Yunosuke Ishibashi chronicles her course of, which incorporates whittling a chunk of lumber right into a hexagon, spray portray its exterior, and soaking the fabric in water to make it pliable.
