At the Bafta TV Awards 2021, Aimee, who plays fan-favourite Aimee Gibbs in Netflix’s Sex Education, was up against tough competition in the category for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme.
So when Tom Allen and Rob Beckett announced that she had won, the 26-year-old was in a state of utter shock.
As she walked onto the stage to rapturous applause, the actor could be heard yelling: ‘What the hell?!’ as she absorbed the fact that she had just won.
‘Oh my god, thank you so much,’ she said as she reached the podium to make her acceptance speech.
Aimee told the masked audience that during a panel with her fellow nominees, they said ‘we would break it into pieces and share it with everyone’, but as it’s ‘solid’, she would hand out a ‘metaphorical piece’ instead.
The West End star paid homage to the other nominees in her category, giving a special shoutout to her Sex Education co-star Emma Mackey, ‘who’s the best scene partner and best friend’.
In addition to Emma, Aimee was also up against Daisy Haggard for Breeders, Daisy May Cooper for This Country, Gbemisola Ikumelo for Famalam and Mae Martin for Feel Good.
Speaking glowingly about the Sex Education cast, Aimee said: ‘We’re such an ensemble, we’re such a team.’
After listing off an array of people to thank, she then added: ‘And my boyfriend, and all my mates, and my nana, and my mum, and my dad, and everyone,’ as the audience laughed.
Aimee is set to reprise her role in Sex Education in season three, which is due to be released on Netflix later this year.
During a recent interview with Metro.co.uk, Sex Education costume designer Rosa Dias teased that the ending of season three will be ‘massive’.
‘When you see series three, the end of it is really quite interesting,’ she said.
‘Whatever happens in four, if it happens, wow – the writers have got a challenge. They’ve got a massive challenge on their hands.
‘It will be really interesting to see if they do do four, what they’re going to do. It’s massive.’
The Bafta TV Awards is on BBC One and will be available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
