The video that triggered the Saturday protest and sparked accusations of racism in opposition to Liege police, noticed officers pinning a girl of Congolese descent all the way down to the bottom. The girl claimed that an officer beat her with a baton and virtually choked her after she refused to get to the bottom and got down to depart following an ID examine. The girl, recognized by native media as Tania, mentioned that she approached the officers herself after she noticed them surrounding a girl, who apparently felt unwell. Being a caregiver, she mentioned she needed to assist the girl till the ambulance arrived. Nonetheless, her interplay with police shortly went off the rails.
Police defended the officers’ conduct, claiming that the girl, who’s now being accused of “insurrection”, went berserk and bit one of many officers, which led to the showdown. Police spokesperson Jadranka Lozina described using drive as “a clear, justified intervention,” insisting that “police don’t have anything to be ashamed of.”
Nonetheless, the incident has drawn comparisons with the dying of American man George Floyed in police custody that triggered a wave of protests within the US final 12 months. The protests have been typically marred by violence, spiraling into looting and vandalism.
