Amongst Laaiplek and Dwarskersbos, the provincial Catastrophe Administration Centre recorded 144 seal fatalities, with one other 50 at Elandsbaai since Tuesday morning.
As well as, the Avian Influenza disaster continues to ravage wild birds within the Western Cape. Roughly 150 lifeless birds had been discovered yesterday in affected areas within the earlier two days. The majority of those fatalities are comprised of 122 Cape Cormorants which had been discovered on Dyer Island. At present, the loss of life toll for the wild birds sits at 16 514.
While the Avian Influenza disaster continues to plague the Western Cape, Bredell asserts that this isn’t linked to the seal mortality. ‘The dying seals aren’t linked to the Avian Influenza outbreak. Fairly it seems that the seals are dying as a result of malnutrition,’ Bredell instructed IOL.
The scenario is topic to additional investigation, and Bredell urged the general public to not feed the seals, no matter malnutrition considerations, because the seals shouldn’t be domesticated and will stay wild creatures. Overfishing stays a priority because it influences the mortality price instantly.
