In Keita Morimoto’s work, tender yellow streetlights, LED store indicators, and medical beams of a public transit cease expose the discomfiting nature of perpetual surveillance. Working in acrylic and oil, the Japanese artist explores the scenes of every day commutes, walks with mates, and journeys to a merchandising machine. He shrouds his streets with shadows that add a mysterious aura to the works, a sense bolstered by the anonymity of the locations and other people.
Morimoto refrains from incorporating distinct symbols, markings, or options that may determine and situate the places inside a selected cultural and geographical context and prefers, as an alternative, to contemplate how most of the ails of contemporary life are ubiquitous. “In at the moment’s society, many individuals endure from the problem of dwelling,” he says. Whereas problems with surveillance, consumerism, and a need for fast-paced manufacturing usually dominate at the moment’s world, the artist focuses on the pockets of calm, magnificence, and magic to be discovered round each road nook.
At present, Morimoto has works on view at Powerlong Museum in Shanghai and will probably be included in upcoming reveals with Kotaro Nukaga in Tokyo and The Gap in New York. Discover extra of his enigmatic items on his website and Instagram. (by way of This Isn’t Happiness)
