Throughout a current earnings name, CD Projekt admits that the upgraded variations of Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 could be delayed to 2022.
Since the beginning of the year, CD Projekt’s roadmap for Cyberpunk 2077 has said that the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 versions would be out during the second half of the year.
The company has reiterated this during a recent earnings call, with a slide presentation listing both Cyberpunk 2077 and an upgraded version of The Witcher 3, for the newer consoles, for late 2021.
However, in the call itself, CD Projekt admits that while a 2021 release is being targeted, there is a chance for both games to be pushed back to 2022, with VP of business development Michał Nowakowski referencing the troubled development of the original Cyberpunk 2077 release.
As transcribed by VGC, he says: ‘The target is to release the next gen version of Cyberpunk 2077 late this year. At the same time, keeping in mind the lessons we have learned during the past year and taking into account that this project still remains in development, we can’t say with full certainty that the production schedule will not change.’
He adds that the situation is slightly different with The Witcher 3, since that game is being mainly handled by the external team at Saber Interactive, which did the Nintendo Switch port. But Nowakowski still says that ‘we cannot be absolutely dead certain that the release schedule will not change.’
It’s not surprising that CD Projekt is looking to play things safe with these new releases. While the original Cyberpunk 2077 was delayed multiple times, it quickly became infamous for how buggy it was when it did launch last December.
As a result, CD Projekt set up a unique refund policy for the game, Sony straight up deleted it from the PlayStation Store (it has since been put back), and CD Projekt’s own investors filed multiple lawsuits against it.
In the same earnings call, joint CEO Adam Kiciński also touched upon Cyberpunk 2077’s first major DLC expansion. He says it is still too soon to share any concrete details about it, but he did say that 160 employees are working on it.
‘The next-gen version is an important step on our adventure in the Cyberpunk universe’ he said. ‘We strongly believe in the long-term potential of this IP. That’s why we’re currently working on the first expansion for the game, although I cannot say anything for more about it at this point in time.’
When quizzed about the expansion’s release date and price, Nowakowski again said that it is too early to discuss either point, ‘It’s in development but we’re not providing any specifics about the date… we would like to keep up the rule that we’re not commenting on the date until we’re ready to deliver that.
‘Regarding the price… historically expansions have been paid as with The Witcher [3]. However, it’s definitely way too early to talk about price, since we’re not even giving the date.’
One thing that is for certain is that CD Projekt has no intention of ditching Cyberpunk 2077 any time soon and remains committed to its future, ‘In accordance with our promise to gamers, we intend to keep improving Cyberpunk for as long as it takes,’ says Kiciński.
‘Meanwhile, we do not lose sight of the bigger picture: we want to develop other products based on our franchises and to keep growing our core business.’
Cyberpunk 2077 is currently available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Stadia.
The Witcher 3 is currently available for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
