Patterns we would usually affiliate with childhood—the plaid vinyl garden chairs of household barbecues, thick pink, brown, and white stripes of Neapolitan ice cream, and the easy dominated markings on pocket book paper—turn into vibrant woven tapestries within the palms of artist Susie Taylor. Nostalgic in aesthetic and vivid in shade palette, the Bay Space artist and textile designer interlaces cotton and linen threads to create flat weaves that seem nearly three-dimensional in complexity, with the mathematically-inclined motifs and refined shifts in shade embedded inside the items themselves.
The fiber compositions draw on the traditions of Bauhaus and Black Mountain Faculty by means of a boldly playful lens and “embrace primary shapes like blocks and stripes to deal with sample, symmetry and shade interplay and the notion that ordered methods can nonetheless flirt with likelihood, interruption, and improvisation,” the artist says.
Taylor’s works are on view by means of October 27 as a part of Origin Tales at Johansson Initiatives in Oakland. Discover extra of her intricate designs on her web site.
