On Wednesday, 6 October 2021, The SA Whale Disentanglement Community (SAWDN) volunteers had been activated after studies of a whale entangled in ghost fishing gear off the coast of Plettenberg Bay. ‘Ghost fishing’ gear refers to fishing gear that’s misplaced or deserted within the ocean after and continues to entice animals in it unintentionally
The volunteers had been fast to climb aboard the NSRI Plettenberg Bay sea rescue craft and located a 7.5-metre sub-adult humpback whale on arrival on the scene.
The whale was discovered entangled with the fishing rope across the tail-stock and trailing fishing. In a troublesome disentanglement operation with two kegging traces, floatation buoys connected to the whale had been reduce, together with the fishing line, utilizing specialised SAWDN reducing gear.
