Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, the holding firm of South Korea’s prime shipbuilder, Hyundai Heavy Industries, has signed a memorandum of understanding with South Korea’s Doosan Gas Cell Firm to collectively develop gas cells for ships.
The pair are engaged on a megawatt (MW)-class stable oxide gas cell (SOFC) system with an purpose to roll it out by 2024.
One other Korean main yard, Samsung Heavy Industries, can also be busy pursuing a gas cell growth technique.
Bloom Power and Samsung Heavy signed a joint growth settlement (JDA) final 12 months to design and develop gas cell-powered ships.
Haeki Jang, Samsung Heavy’s vice chairman of shipbuilding and drilling gross sales engineering, commented on the time of the JDA signing: “Our purpose is to switch all current major engines and generator engines with these extremely environment friendly stable oxide gas cells to align with the Worldwide Maritime Group’s 2030 and 2050 environmental targets.”
