In Benjamin Sack’s imagined environments, it’s not unusual to search out angular mazes resembling dystopian buildings, buildings packed so intently collectively it’s tough to differentiate one from the subsequent, and labyrinthine walkways that spiral like fractals. Working in pen and ink, the artist (beforehand) attracts intricate black-and-white metropolises that waver between group and chaos: He performs with geometry, angles, and dimension to render perplexing maps teeming with each conventional structure and surreal additions, like treble clefs, astral shapes, and dizzying line- and dot-work.
Whereas a lot of Sack’s works meld the previous, current, and future right into a single show, his latest feet-wide maze titled “Roots of Being (Per Aspera advert Astra)” is straight drawn from this final yr. “This piece was an enormous, Daedalian endeavor that was began on the outset of the preliminary lockdowns again in March 2020 and completed upon my receiving the primary dose of the vaccine in April,” the artist tells Colossal. “A big labyrinth emblematic of the epoch we persevered.”
Watch the timelapse video beneath and head to Instagram for a glimpse into Sack’s course of, and decide up a print in his store.
