A former product designer turned bead artist, Jan Huling begins every sculpture with a clean type within the form of a miniature horse, large praying mantis, and keen monkey perched on a field. She then glues small glass items in meandering strains, concentric circles, and different elaborately constructed motifs. “I don’t sketch out designs beforehand,” she tells Colossal. “Reasonably I let my designs develop organically and let the work itself encourage me.”
Every embellishment is a examine of colour, texture, and type, with some patterns structuring facial options just like the radiant eyes of the nine-foot “Das Bug” and others including hypnotic ornaments just like the intersecting patches that span the size of the tail in “KoKo.” Though Huling doesn’t translate any particular motifs, she shares that she’s drawn to traditions of Mexican and Indian artists, along with the works of Nick Cave (beforehand) and Tim Burton.
Huling, who’s primarily based in Jersey Metropolis Heights, may have sculptures on view at Artwork Market San Francisco this April by means of Duane Reed Gallery, and her billowing costume titled “The Robe” is headed to the Museum of Beadwork this summer time. Discover a set of her intricate creations on her website and Instagram. (by way of Women’s Art)
