Cape City’s well-known Antipolis shipwreck that stood for years within the water off Oudekraal, has washed ashore close to the 12 Apostles Resort.
A current swell inflicting a surge of extraordinarily massive waves on Wednesday 19 and Thursday, 20 January may need dislodged the wreck. It was located in a Marine Protected Space throughout the Karbonkelberg restricted space.
The Maritime and Underwater Cultural Heritage Unit at The South African Heritage Sources Company issued a warning: ‘The wreckage may be very unstable, and the unit advises folks to chorus from climbing on the wreck and or diving close to it in the meanwhile. The scenario is being monitored by the Metropolis of Cape City and we are going to submit any updates once they turn out to be out there.’
The Antipolis, a Greek oil tanker, ran aground throughout astorm in 1977. She and the Romelia, which ran aground close to Sandy Bay, had been each being towed from Greece by the tug Kiyo Maru No. 2 to be scrapped in Taiwan, in accordance with Submerged. It was a preferred dive spot at about 12 metres deep.
