A choice of pictures from “Riddle,” by Brooklyn, New York-based photographer and artist Fiona Véronique. Initially from France, Véronique’s work facilities round place-identity, and the methods during which folks relate to their environment. Transfixed by the ignored particulars of quotidian life, she shines a lightweight on these moments and divulges the eerie, uncommon, and at instances humorous features of the on a regular basis.
Printed as a photobook by Antics Publications in 2020, “Riddle” follows a highway journey Véronique took together with her sister, from Seattle, Washington to Elko Nevada. Impressed by the poets of the Nationwide Cowboy Poetry Gathering that takes place in Elko every year, an occasion the place poets and storytellers come collectively to inform tales of life within the West, Veronique got down to assemble a visible poem from the landscapes and folks she encountered alongside the best way. “The poem navigates the shut, but at instances contradictory relationship between the Far West and American id;” she explains— “between the romantic perfect of its pristine wilderness, its freedom, its promise, and the precise day-to-day enterprise of existence in a formidable land.”
