Heji Shin has ruffled various feathers in her profession via provocative and, at instances, controversial images of notorious celebrities, crowning infants, and express scenes that show the rawness and vitality of her topics. Born in South Korea, the German photographer lately turned her lens on a very antagonistic bunch of roosters in her collection Large Cocks. Shot in her distinctly discomfiting and emphatic model, the pictures are strikingly masculine and aggressive, documenting the birds as they screech, splay their claws, and do karate-style leaps into the air.
In a current interview, Shin writes that whereas the portraits exude ardour, they stray from the extra systemic and militaristic views of violence we regularly see. “The short-lived outbursts of indignant cock power look Hellenistic and virile,” she says.
The photographer is represented by Reena Spaulings in New York, the place Large Cocks was lately on show, and you may view a bigger assortment of her work on the gallery’s website and her Instagram. (by way of Modern Artwork Day by day)
