Celebrated Catalan architect Carme Pinós; multihyphenate artist, architect, educator, and author Anthony Titus; and the husband-wife founding principals of three structure studios—Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee of Johnston Marklee, Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu of SO–IL, and Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa of Ensamble Studio—are the winners of the 2022 Structure Award bestowed by the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
The winners have been chosen from a bunch of 25 people and practices nominated by members of the Academy, a prestigious 122-year-old honor society based mostly in New York Metropolis. The jurors for the 2022 Structure Award have been Toshiko Mori (chair), Marlon Blackwell, Peter Eisenman, Steven Holl, Annabelle Selldorf, Nader Tehrani, and Meejin Yoon.
The $20,000 Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize, the Academy’s flagship structure award first introduced to Gordon Bunshaft, is conferred to an architect of any nationality who has “made a major contribution to structure as an artwork.” Moreover, two (generally three) Arts and Letters Awards are introduced to American architects whose collective work is “characterised as having a powerful private path, whereas two (generally one) Arts and Letters Awards are given to “American who discover concepts in structure by any medium of expression.” The Arts and Letters Awards, at all times 4 in whole, are for $10,000.
The Academy’s inaugural Structure Award was introduced in 1955.

Carme Pinós, founder and principal of Barcelona-based structure and design agency Estudio Carme Pinós (Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize).
Antón García-Abril and Débora Mesa, founding principals of Boston-based structure agency Ensamble Studio (Arts and Letters Award for work characterised as having a powerful private path).
Florian Idenburg and Jing Liu, founding principals of Brooklyn-based structure observe SO–IL (Arts and Letters Award for work characterised as having a powerful private path).
Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee, founding companions of Los Angeles– and Cambridge, Massachusetts–based mostly structure agency Johnston Marklee (Arts and Letters Award for work characterised as having a powerful private path).
Anthony Titus, professor of structure at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and founding father of New York Metropolis–based mostly interdisciplinary artwork and structure observe Anthony Titus Studio (Arts and Letters Award for exploring concepts in structure by any medium of expression).
In 2021, the American Academy of Arts and Letters bestowed the Structure Award to designer, educator, and urbanist Justin Garrett Moore; Ersela Kripa and Stephen Mueller, founders of El Paso–based mostly interdisciplinary pratice AGENCY; Julie Eizenberg and Hank Koning, founding principals of Santa Monica-based structure agency Koning Eizenberg Structure; and Dwayne Oyler and Jenny Wu, founders of the L.A.-based structure and design agency Oyler Wu Collaborative. Marina Tabassum, founder and principal of the Dhaka, Bangladesh-based Marina Tabassum Architects, was awarded the Arnold W. Brunner Memorial Prize.
Final month, the Academy introduced that 18 new members and three honorary members had been elected to its ranks, together with three architects and one panorama architect: Deborah Berke, Thomas Phifer, Mabel O. Wilson, and Michael Van Valkenburgh. The brand new members will likely be inducted into the Academy throughout a ceremony on Might 18. Membership within the Academy is restricted to 300 architects, visible artists, composers, and writers; they’re elected for all times and pay no dues.
