Penthouse M spreads throughout the highest two flooring of a Eighties condominium constructing on the Gold Coast. True to that period and site, the unique condominium was ostentatious, with glass bricks, gold swan tapware and a Scarface-style ensuite with built-in round spa tub. With a renovation by CJH Studio, the condominium has been stripped of its flash and its bling, and is now a light-weight and open house with a smooth, creamy palette and sculptural varieties. “The design is an entire juxtaposition to its typical Gold Coast environment, reflecting the purchasers’ need for a minimal design strategy that suited their way of life and aesthetics,” says Cassie James-Herrick, director of CJH Studio.
The purchasers – a younger household – wished a timeless, understated and calming dwelling. Strata constraints and the bottom construct positioned restrictions on the venture, but in addition supplied inspiration for the design. Structural partitions and columns, plumbing, and exterior home windows and doorways couldn’t be moved; nevertheless, the curves within the construction of the constructing influenced CJH Studio’s strategy.
The staircase treads and banister have been stuffed in to intensify the sculptural type (and enhance security), whereas the big structural column within the kitchen has been elevated in measurement and rounded off. The majority-heads enclosing the sprinkler caps are curved, and the lounge wall plastered to create a big arch and alcove, emphasizing the double-height ceiling. The prevailing travertine flooring supplied the place to begin for the sunshine and minimal tonal palette: tiles, laminate, carpet and timber in creamy hues to create a soothing house and offset the glare of the beachside gentle.
CJH Studio opened up the small and closed-off kitchen to include a small eating space. The purchasers’ need to maintain their present home equipment, which have been positioned out of view, additionally directed the kitchen planning. A curved infill island gives further bench and cupboard space, and a breakfast bar alongside the window presents seating with an enviable view.
The freestanding tub within the ensuite upstairs can be positioned for this view. Rounded toilet vanities and softly curved partitions, which have changed the previous harsh angles, diffuse the sunshine to melt the glare. Downstairs, CJH Studio has internalized the unique laundry (in a small cabinet) into a rest room, making a walk-in bathe and bigger laundry. Glass bricks herald pure gentle from a window adjoining – a refined nod to the period of the Eighties constructing.
