Meticulous analysis informs the third quantity of a scholarly biography.
Scharnhorst completes his commodious lifetime of Twain with a densely detailed chronology of private trauma {and professional} triumph, together with the publication of The Tragedy of Pudd’nhead Wilson, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Private Recollections of Joan of Arc, Following the Equator, and chapters of his rambling autobiography. At all times needing cash, Sam, as Scharnhorst calls him, labored tirelessly—writing, lecturing, performing—to compensate for unhealthy enterprise dealings and a number of other financial depressions. In 1891, he carted his spouse, daughters, and maid to Europe, hoping they may stay extra cheaply than at dwelling. Apart from monetary pressures, he confronted household stresses. In 1896, his beloved daughter Susy died of spinal meningitis, for which he blamed himself. If he had not been “pressured by monetary exigency to lecture world wide to pay his money owed,” he may have saved the household in America; as an alternative, Susy died “a pauper & an exile.” Jean, one other daughter, had epilepsy, a situation that deteriorated into violent outbursts, particularly towards her father; she died in 1909. Clara, pursuing a singing profession, was rebellious and, as a result of Sam supported her, costly. His spouse, Livy, suffered from a coronary heart situation for which she futilely sought a remedy; she died in 1904. Scharnhorst recounts all of Sam’s writing output and its vital reception; the occasions in his packed social calendar; his many public appearances earlier than crowds that numbered within the 1000’s; and his evolution from social satirist and man of letters to “cultural critic, public mental, and political sage.” Among the many points towards which he railed have been racism; antisemitism; Christian Science and Christian missionaries; imperialism; and “the rapacity and materialism of twentieth-century America, which he blamed on such publish–Civil Warfare fats cats as John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and Jay Gould.” Beneficiant however by no means apologetic, Scharnhorst ably reveals a fancy man: irascible, useless, and hungry for adulation.
