She segues between characters with ease, shifting from misplaced little one to struggling landholder, despairing mom, policeman, Indigenous stockman, vicar, native trainer, policeman’s new spouse, Indigenous tracker, travelling overseas artist, prostitute, and extra. This may sound overwhelming, however McFarlane inhabits her characters so convincingly that the reader can hear them pondering and see the world by way of their eyes.
